Open Day - Sunday May 4th - 11am to 4pm
As usual, everything except the weather is within our control. Can everyone lend a hand even if it's just getting posters into their local shops / libraries and information centres. The poster is
attached. On the day, we need friendly folk (i.e. everyone) to be there to tell visitors what sailing can offer and also we need lots of help around the clubhouse and on the water.

We would also like plenty of boats on the water doing casual sailing. (Hugh Melvin)

Open Day sad postscript
Unfortunately thieves like Open Days as well! If you are helping and use the changing rooms please do not leave any valuables (including car keys) in your clothing left there. Bring a smallish padlock and use the lockers .. there's plenty of them. Thieves also 'case' the club and have been known to come back as 'visitors' for a few weeks afterward so the committee advice is always use a locker. (Hugh Melvin)

Honda rib challenge update
Aaron White, Alex Oyston and Chris Armstrong are honing their skills in the rib to enter the Honda Rib Challenge. Good luck to them in the regional heats. (Hugh Melvin)

Goose fence
It's blue, it's wacky and the geese don't like it. The temporary barrier is meant to stop the geese doing their thing all over the park (and eating the grass). When the club is closed, the barrier should be drawn right across the shore edge. At the end of the day the OOD would love you to assist by closing the gaps. The jury's out about how well it will work but it's better than moaning!! (Hugh Melvin)

Catering
From now on Yvonne and Tony will be 'behind the hatch' on all sailing days including Fridays. If the weather is rotten and there's few at the club, they may go home early so ask if you particularly want a meal on such occasions. They also welcome constructive comments and suggestions for the menu . Judy and Hugh are the 'catering' committee people to contact.

Times are: Wednesday 16.00 to closing, Friday 16.30 to 18.00, Saturday all day, and Sunday all day. (Hugh Melvin)

Cleaning
A big thank you to Susan Kemp who has been cleaning the club this season. Members have commented that the clubhouse is looking brighter and cared for (at least until sailors come back in!!). (Hugh Melvin)

Handling boats in wind
There was an incident recently when some members were turning a boat over in very windy conditions. The number of people involved was just sufficient in normal conditions, but the wind caught the boat and caused one of them minor injuries. Please take extra care when it is windy. (Richard Hanage)

Tying down boats
Several boats tipped over, or become displaced, in the March winds – especially those where the bow had been lifted high up on a huge pile of tyres. Please tie your boats down well – eg tie the tie-down rope round the mast to reduce the chance of the boat moving sideways. (Richard Hanage)

Duty Rotas
Can I ask members who use the web based “Duty Man” system to receive and swap their duties to click the confirm button when they accept their duties – it helps the Duty Officer to know his team will turn up. (Just 2 clicks required – expand your highlighted duty by clicking on the (+) then click on one of the confirm buttons). (Ian Holden)

Saturday 19th April – RYA Club Race Officer Course CANCELLED
Apologies – a total oversight on my part – the day will have to be re-arranged. If those who are interested would let me know I will make arrangements to suit their availabilities. Ian Holden at
sail@scalingdam.org

Friday/Saturday 9 & 10th May – Start Racing Course
Would those members interested in this introductory event please contact me. There will be a nominal charge of £10 to cover expenses. The syllabus will offer an understanding of the principles, basic rules, on water practice to improve boat handling skills, lots of short races followed by discussion to help the learning process – and mostly – enjoyment. I hope participants will feel ready to join in the 1200 Sunday Novice races by the end of the event. If you plan to race in a two-hander get your crew / helm to come along too so you can learn together. Pre-requisite – RYA Level 2 please. Contact Ian Holden at
sail@scalingdam.org

Wifi in the Clubhouse
We now have Wifi in the Club House for those that can’t bear to be away from their laptop for long. No access code needed. (Richard Hanage)

Windsurfer Improver Clinic
John Sutton is running a clinic for windsurfers who are beyond beginner level and who want to improve their technique, and who are willing to share their experience with other windsurfers. See
information attached. (John Sutton)

Second Hand Kit sale
We plan to sell the ‘lost property’ during the ‘Open Day’. If you would like to sell other kit please bring it along. (Richard Hanage)

Child Welfare Officer
Karen White has kindly agreed to act as ‘Child Welfare Officer’. If you are ware of any issues affecting childrens’ welfare, please contact her at
sail@scalingdam.org

Omega available for hire
The club Omega hasn’t been used much yet. Just a reminder that it is available for members to use. (Richard Hanage)

Trailers in the Boat Park
If you have left a trailer at the top of the boat park, by the hedge, would you please remove it as soon as possible. We haven’t space for trailers, and they shouldn’t be left at the club. Later in the season we will dispose of any that remain. If there’s a problem, let me know at
sail@scalingdam.org

Best wishes,

Richard Hanage – Membership Secretary
